Wednesday Meditation (Matthew 4:1)

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. .

We are not quite sure what it means for us to hear that Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted. What was the reason for Jesus to be tempted? Jesus was baptised. The voice from heaven proclaiming that Jesus was the beloved Son was heard. Why, then, was it necessary for Jesus to be tempted by the devil? What was the purpose?

Wednesday Meditation (1 John 4:18)

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love..

The first time I felt fear in a strangely unsettling way was when the war on Iraq was declared by the president of the USA. I still don’t know why I was fearful in hearing the announcement, but thinking back, I was getting very upset and fearful over what was to come. For the first time I feared that many people would suffer the devastation and destruction of human lives. I could sense the power of death and I was fearful.

Wednesday Meditation (Malachi 3:1)

See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight--indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.

Whenever I think about the future, I wonder what God has in store for God's people in Niagara Falls. Will God’s future involve us at Drummond Hill or Christians in a new way or will God continue to find ways to recreate the world without any churches?

Wednesday Meditation (Micah 1:5)

What does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?

As people of faith we do our best to please our God. Our instinct is to be good Christians–whatever and however we mean by being ‘good’ Christians. For the majority of us, being good means to keep commandments and do as few wrongs as possible. In other words we avoid committing any form of sin. So when we are asked, “What does the Lord require of you?” our response is to keep holy and not sin.

(T)he people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.

Americans were remembering Martin Luther King Jr. on this past Monday. He was born on January 15, 1929. After his studies, he was called to Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in 1954. Before he and his wife arrived in Alabama, the blacks in the Southern United States were already involved in movements to break down segregation laws.
